Feature artist: Throw Me The Statue

I don't know what it is about songs with handclaps, but for some reason as soon as I hear them I somewhat jump up and down in my seat and race to add it to my beloved "handclaps" tag on last.fm (which was cruely deleted a while ago, mind you, forcing me to restart, terrible). In the first moments of hearing Lolita by Throw Me The Statue, that was pretty much exactly what I did.

Throw Me The Statue is the almost-one-man band of Scott Reitherman, hailing from Seattle, and from the two songs I have in my possession so far, I'm becoming a very big fan. Neither are the same, and they show a capacity for variety unachieved by many artists who have been on the indie scene for years. Obviously, there are other songs which a very good, but you'll just have to find out for yourselves in that respect. Yutacan Gold and About To Walk are definite standouts from the new album, Moonbeams.

Lolita is definitely the essence of the happy summer pop song - the best type of music there is, with its steady drumbeat and carefree guitar. The xylophone and cute lyrics don't do anything bad for it either. It's definitely a song that I'll be singing to myself for at least the next week or so. Conquering Kids, on the other hand, reminds me a lot of The Shins, and I definitely thought I was listening to Andrew Bird towards the end. Which is a very good combination, and I can definitely see TMTS heading in a direction similar to that of The Shins. It's quite refined, not losing any of its essence in this respect, but there are things like a xylophone that help bring it out from pretty minimalism into a great song. Young Sensualists is another amazing song, beautifully upbeat and carefree, with a definite island feel about it, with the ukulele definitely giving it that escapist feel. I think you'll be hearing quite a bit more about Throw Me The Statue in the future..

Throw Me The Statue - Lolita
Throw Me The Statue - Conquering Kids
Throw Me The Statue - Young Sensualists

You can buy the new album Moonbeams here, and I highly recommend doing so, it should be amazing. Plus.. it's only $10. I will surely be doing so when I find an appropriate credit card..

mmmmhmmmm I do love me some handclaps. Those are some sweet tracks, I really like the range he shows. Good call on the Andrew Bird reference, I like the comparison. Now I just gotta find me 10 bucks!

Man this guy can do it all!! some songs sound like Paul Simon while others sound like The Shins. and then there's his own style that ties everything together. I'd say he's one of the most promising voices I've heard in a while... keep track of this one!!

im obsessed. it nearly provoked an eruption into a perfectly choreographed dance at the office - fat ladies using staplers as microphones and all.

Wow, I love it! While there are many obvious influences to TMTS' work, I like how he has his own style and vision. Thanks for posting this review!

TMTS is the future -- Yucatan Gold makes me drool all over my headphones, and don't ask how that's possible because when you're listening to this album... anything is possible.

yeah!! scotts new record is a incredible mix of new soundz innovatively put together...i would definately say it is not even close to the shins in comparison.. to me they are completly different music wise,, and having met both scott and james they are both completly different people in their creative approach...
